CPR Training - Choosing The Right Course For Your Needs

It’s estimated that receiving CPR at the scene soon after the cessation of the heart and breathing can more than double the victim’s chances of survival. While CPR training is a valuable skill for many, for those in the healthcare profession, it’s mandatory.

Here, we look in more detail at what CPR training covers. Participants should be taught to recognise the signs of a cardiac arrest; summon help from individuals with appropriate medical training; and begin basic life support (BLS). BLS consists of checking whether the victim is responsive; and if not, ensuring an open airway and whether breathing is normal. Techniques for chest compressions and rescue breaths are also taught.

The more advanced type is mandatory resuscitation training for healthcare professionals. This includes BLS training, utilisation of a manual or automated external defibrillator, and airway management techniques. These techniques may also be incorporated into clinical courses such as venepuncture training or vaccination training, in case the patient suffers an anaphylactic reaction to an injection.

As with many medical training courses, it’s recommended that healthcare professionals receive refresher CPR training sessions. As we never know when we’ll be faced with an emergency, it’s vital to keep this life-saving skillset updated.
